The New Brunswick Medical Society and Perinatal NB are urging pregnant individuals to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
In a joint statement, Dr. Mark MacMillan, president of the New Brunswick Medical Society, and Dr. Lynn Murphy-Kaulbeck, medical director of Perinatal NB, said pregnant individuals are four times more likely to be hospitalized if they contract COVID-19.
As well, 40 per cent of those hospitalized due to the virus during pregnancy are admitted to an ICU, adding COVID-19 can increase the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth.
The statement outlined a study of more than 35,000 pregnant individuals following vaccination, and mentioned, “there is no evidence that any vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, cause fertility problems.”
The statement added that physicians are urging all eligible New Brunswickers, including those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
