Police in Saint John have provided more details on how an inmate from the county jail was returned to custody.
The Saint John Police Force arrested 46-year-old Terrance Smith on Tuesday.
In a news release Wednesday, police said Smith escaped from the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre last Thursday around 11:30 p.m.
A team that included members of the Saint John and Kennebecasis Regional police forces was established to locate and arrest Smith.
Police said officers noticed Smith driving a stolen vehicle on Rothesay Avenue in Saint John on Tuesday.
Around 5:15 p.m., Smith was taken into custody at an east side gas station after he exited the vehicle.
He was arrested for escaping lawful custody, possession of stolen property, and theft-related offences.
A 31-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle was also arrested for an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to attend court and possession of stolen property.
The pair are being held in police custody ahead of a court appearance.
