The city’s common council has approved 1st and 2nd reading for a rezoning application for the former St. John the Baptist Church rectory on Broad Street.
Purchaser, Matthew Carr, said there is a plan for the building is to have five well-built and safe suites by fall 2022.
“It’s been great so far integrated into with the community, and collaborating with locals, and that will continue with regards to the building and hiring out trades for the property.”
The design for the inside will be a single one-bedroom apartment, two one-bedroom apartments with a den in each, and two two-bedroom apartments.
When Carr was asked about rental prices, he mentioned they have yet to land on an exact price.
“What we want to do is meet what the market is asking, and I think as we are adding five units to the city it will help to spread things out.”
1st and 2nd readings were supported unanimously by common council.
“I moved to Saint John in 1984, and attend that church from 1985 until it closed, so I’m familiar with that building and that church, so it’s wonderful to see it get reimagined,” said Mayor Donna Reardon after common council voted on the matter.
Carr added they are considering four parking spaces in two possible locations.
