You’ll get an extra hour of sleep this weekend, with the clocks going back an hour.
Daylight saving time will come to an end at 2am Sunday morning.
At the same time, you’re reminded to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Moncton Fire Prevention Officer Steve Richardson says, “We encourage you to take them down, and replace the battery. Look at the detectors and just make sure it’s not too dusty or dirty or anything depending on how old it is. Test it to make sure it works.”
He adds, it’s also important that they are in good condition, “It’s a very efficient and a very cheap form of safety in your home. It is very important that you take the vacuum or blow the dust out of the detectors. Just make sure they are in good shape. You want them to work as efficient as you can. Checking them with each time change is a perfect opportunity for that.”
Richardson says your detectors also have an expiry date. They’re usually good for five to ten years, “If your detector doesn’t have a date on it, you should replace it, because it is probably too old.”
The Office of the Fire Marshal is also urging New Brunswickers to follow these steps to ensure their home is protected:
-Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
-If you have an attached garage or any device that burns wood, gas, oil or propane, install a carbon monoxide alarm outside all sleeping areas. Replace these alarms every seven to 10 years depending upon the manufacturer’s guidelines.
-Create and practice an escape plan with your family.
