Snowbirds have been waiting for this for nearly 20 months.
Starting today, Canadians who have homes or property in the United States are now allowed to cross the international border by car.
Steve Olmstead with CAA Atlantic says his office has been busy fielding calls about trip planning, booking and travel insurance.
“With things opening up, even one instance of loosening a regulation allowing travel to happen – it could be just one minor thing – and it gets a lot of people thinking.”
Olmstead says travelling in the pandemic era requires paying attention to details.
It is strongly recommended that anyone who travels internationally should buy insurance and make sure the policy contains COVID-19 coverage.
“So we haven’t gotten a lot of calls about people wanting to book helicopters and things. But people have been very diligent about planning with respect to restrictions,” notes Olmstead.
Last winter, many snowbirds became creative and found loopholes around pandemic restrictions.
Some even paid for helicopter rides across the international border where they picked up their car which was shipped by truck.
