The Saint John Arts Centre is asking for the public’s help to find a stolen piece of Indigenous artwork.
Officials say a carved mask by Indigenous artist Ned Bear was taken on the afternoon of Oct. 19.
“The mask was the centrepiece of a permanent display acknowledging the unceded lands of the First Nations in this part of New Brunswick,” the centre said in a Facebook post.
“It is important to the Saint John community that this mask be found so it can return to its rightful place in helping the discussion towards truth and reconciliation.”
The uptown arts centre, located on Peel Plaza, is offering a $500 reward for the safe return of the mask.
In a news release on Tuesday, the Saint John Police Force said its Major Crime Unit is investigating the theft.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the centre at 506-633-4870 or the Saint John Police Force at 506-648-3333.
