Romero House has served more than 120,000 meals this year, a big increase over the 82,000 meals in 2019.
The 15th annual Ritchie’s Food Drive in support of the Brunswick Drive soup kitchen is underway until Saturday.
Through the entire pandemic, meals are distributed through a take out window.
Evelyn McNulty of Romero House said she has seen a lot of new faces this year.
“A lot of senior citizens. I think in the past we had people that maybe were living on the edge.
That maybe wouldn’t want to come into the soup kitchen to have a meal because it’s a bit of a rough crowd, It’s much easier to pick up a meal in the window and go on your way,” McNulty said.
McNulty said people have started to ask for winter clothing.
On Sunday, a man who was just released from jail told them he didn’t have a winter coat.
“[He had] a pair of shoes that don’t fit him. He takes a size 10 and the shoes were a size 7. We got him a pair of shoes and unfortunately could only give him a sweater because we don’t have a coat. He’ll be back tomorrow and we’ll find a coat,” McNulty said.
A truck will be available in the Ritchie’s parking lot for drive thru food donation drop off.
Donations of money and food can be dropped off at Ritchies on Rothesay Avenue between 8am and 5:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, the last day, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
