A holiday film classic is now being portrayed on a local stage.
‘A Christmas Story’ presented by The Saint John Theatre Company opened on Wednesday at the Imperial Theatre.
The show’s director, Bob Doherty mentioned in a phone interview it was intimidating developing the film for theatre, as fans are expecting to see certain things from the holiday classic.
“As well as to deliver those things, for example, the leg lamp, the BB Gun with the almost shooting Ralphie’s eye out, certain themes, certain lines fans are expecting, so, yea, it was a pressure to deliver that.”
During production, Doherty mentioned it was also difficult to find certain props, such as the famous leg lamp.
“It turned out someone here in Saint John who was a fan of the movie who had bought the leg lamp, and he loaned it to us for the show, so we were fortunate in that.”
“As well, there were all kinds of props to locate, a huge set to build, but we had a great team tackling that,” continued Doherty.
All the actors in the show are from the Greater Saint John, however, COVID-19 did present some challenges during casting.
“We had a hard time finding the right people, we needed children, but with COVID we couldn’t take anybody that’s not fully vaccinated, so everybody had to be 12 and older to audition,” said Doherty.
The show is just over 2-hours, has a 20-minute intermission, and runs until November 27 (Saturday).
Tickets are $42.50, $35.50 for matinees, and $10 for students.
Doherty added tickets are going quick, so patrons should not delay.
