A historic appointment for a Nova Scotian MP.
West Nova’s Chris d’Entremont has been named Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.
He’s the first from our province since 1916 to hold the position and the first of Acadian descent.
d’Entremont says it’s a different way for his riding to be represented.
“It’s a great honour to be able to sit in that chair, and it’s a great honour that our parties and our Speaker chose me to be in that position,” says d’Entremont.
He announced his candidacy for the Speakership last week, saying he didn’t want to sit on the sidelines.
d’Entremont says the last parliament was difficult due to the pandemic and revelations about a different work environment.
The former MLA turned federal politician was chosen after a secret ballot was cast in the House.
He says after another Liberal minority, Canadians want the federal parties to work together.
“The Speaker’s job is to make sure that parliament works correctly, and to make sure all the parties are working together and talking to each other in a more collegial fashion.”
The announcement was made after Question Period yesterday by Speaker Anthony Rota, who was chosen for his second term.
d’Entremont says a Speaker’s role is to set an example at all times, and it’s a task he’ll commit to carrying out to ensure the institution works properly.
