With COVID-19 cases climbing, questions linger about potential public health measures for the holidays.
Health Minister Dorothy Shephard said Thursday that new rules might be needed if cases continue to creep up.
That prompted interim Opposition leader Roger Melanson to ask for more details during question period in the legislature on Friday.
“We all want to have a normal Christmas, last year was brutal, to be honest, and we all want to have all of our families and friends gather wherever they’re hosting a Christmas dinner,” Melanson said.
Currently, indoor gatherings are limited to your current household plus 20 contacts, but it does not apply to businesses like restaurants, where proof of vaccination is required.
There is no limit for outdoor gatherings, but physical distance must be maintained.
Premier Blaine Higgs said they have asked Public Health to provide a roadmap for the coming months.
“We don’t want to cancel Christmas, we want to work through Christmas in living with COVID. We are going to need everyone to participate in doing the basics in order to protect themselves and their family,” said Higgs.
Higgs noted that the current outbreaks are directly related to home gatherings.
