The ongoing sale of some properties on Campobello Island links back to a 1990s scandal involving Bill and Hilary Clinton.
Two Arkansas businessmen formed the Campobello Company and purchased several properties in the 1980s.
One of those men, James McDougal, later went to jail in connection with the Whitewater scandal.
The province came to own some of these properties for various reasons, including the current owners falling behind on the property tax and the properties being sold off in tax sales.
The New Brunswick government decided earlier this year to make these properties available to the public.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Jill Green said interest in the first group of properties has been high.
“We didn’t know [what the interest might be]. This is something new for us. There have been a lot of people contacting us and a lot of activity on the website,” Green said.
The properties are being released in groups. Tenders for the first 25 properties closed on Monday.
“Another one in February and another one in March. So this is the first of 25 and the two others will have about 25 properties in them,” Green said.
Despite several attempts, the Clintons were never prosecuted in connection with Whitewater.
