Monday marked the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
It acknowledges the events which took place at École Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6, 1989, where 14 women were murdered.
Volunteers from UNB Saint John held a vigil on Monday evening, which began with a presentation at the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal uptown.
Several people were in attendance to hear from five speakers who addressed issues about violence against women. They also heard music from Jill Wong.
Norah Dudley, a UNB Saint John alumnus, hosted the event and shared a message during an interview.
“When you see something that’s not right, you need to say it, you need to stop it, even though it’s not your business it is your business, gender-based violence is everybody’s problem,” said Dudley.
“So, I urge everyone to stand up for your fellow person in life.”
Dudley added that she continues to feel empowered.
“I’m empowered to continue the fight for gender-based violence, I’m a feminist which truly means just equality for everybody, regardless of gender, them, him, her, it doesn’t matter, I just feel everyone should have a fair shot in life,” she said.
After the presentations, the crowd travelled to the Three Sisters Lamp for a short vigil and more music from Wong.
