An early morning fire caused extensive damage to an engine rebuilding and repair shop in Saint John.
Fire crews were called to Saint John Engine Rebuilders on City Road around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
“They encountered some pretty heavy fire load and smoke coming from a two-to-three-storey wooden structure with a metal roof,” Platoon Chief Brian Wilson said in a phone interview.
“The metal roof in these older buildings really complicated things for them. It makes the fire very hard to access.”
Wilson said the below-freezing temperatures also created challenges for fire crews.
Temperatures hovered around -6°C overnight with a wind chill of -12 to -14, according to Environment Canada.
“We had to deal with regulators icing up and gear iced up and watch for icy conditions on our aerials,” said Wilson. “We had both aerial trucks deployed and in use.”
At one point, crews from every single fire station in the city were at the scene, said Wilson.
No one was hurt in the fire, which remains under investigation at this time.
City Road was closed for several hours while crews battled the blaze but reopened before 7:30 a.m.
