Tuesday marked the first official day of winter, and with it, a new set of challenges when getting behind the wheel.
Snow and ice conditions can be especially dangerous if you’re not prepared.
RCMP Cpl. Lisa Croteau says there are things that drivers can do to better protect themselves on the road.
“If you are on the road, slow down. The road can be unpredictable, especially with the temperature change, so sometimes it can be slippery so it’s best to slow down opposed to what you would normally drive,” she said.
Dedicated winter tires can also greatly reduce the risk of a collision and, while they aren’t required in New Brunswick, they are strongly recommended.
Croteau added that if you do come across a collision scene, it’s important to slow down and move over.
“Slow down as you approach a collision scene, if you’re able to move over if it’s safe to do so, please do so,” she said.
Winter driving can be unpredictable, so planning ahead can make a world of difference.
