What kind of mask should we wear, when protecting ourselves from COVID-19 and from the new Omicron variant?
Many experts are now recommending N95 masks to help reduce the spread of the virus.
Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Theresa Tam says the virus can linger in the air we breathe.
New Brunswick Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jennifer Russell says, “Dr. Tam’s messaging, we definitely support. Her most recent messaging is about getting the best, tightest fitting mask you can. Obviously, a surgical mask is better than a fabric mask. KN95 is better than a surgical mask. It’s about levels of protection and what you have access to. At this time, we do support the recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Canada about getting the best fitting mask possible.”
Dr. Tam says medical masks are better at filtering viruses and single cloth masks won’t offer enough protection. She adds N95 masks provide a better fit for the face.
Wearing a mask is the better choice, versus not wearing one at all.
