Prince Edward Island’s Public Health and Premier Dennis King offered some reassurance today that they are doing everything they can to control the spread of COVID-19.
Case numbers have recently skyrocketed to levels the Island hasn’t seen since the pandemic began.
PEI Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Heather Morrison says they are dealing with the crushing Omicron wave.
“It will mean we do transition and deliberately so towards our journey of living normally with COVID-19 where we move from a pandemic to an endemic state meaning there will be, at some point, stable transmission of this virus.”
Dr. Morrison reported 169 new COVID 19 cases for PEI today bringing the total number of active cases to 680.
The Island has three people in hospital, with no one in an ICU.
Premier King says the recent spike in new cases may seem alarming but there is a positive.
“Although we are seeing high numbers of cases, because of that high uptake of the vaccine, our province is seeing mild illness with the cases thus far for the vast majority… and that is a good sign.”
King adds whatever the province does over the next few weeks will assist them in learning to live with the challenges of the Omicron variant.
