It has only been six months, but Robert Bruce said his experience in Saint John has been “very positive so far.”
Bruce took over as chief of the Saint John Police Force on July 1.
“The city is great, I enjoy it … from a policing side of it some of the finest police officers serve in this community, and it’s an honour and privilege for me to serve with those members in this community,” mentioned Bruce.
However, Bruce brought up that Saint John is not without its challenges.
“But, we’re taking those on together as a group in the police force, as well, we have an excellent board of commissioners that works collectively with us and a council and a mayor that has been supportive,” he said.
Bruce retired in 2015 after spending 33 years with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
“I owe most of everything that I have accomplished in my life to the OPP, and the members that serve in that organization,” he said.
Since moving to Saint John, Bruce said policing is a bit different in the city compared to Ontario.
“As far as some of the intricacies of how the city works with the board, council, and mayor, but policing is policing, so if you want to lead a life of significance, if you want to make a difference, policing is the way to do it,” he said.
Bruce replaced Stephan Drolet who stepped down due to personal reasons.
