Saint John saw its first temporary overnight parking bans of the season after Friday’s snowstorm.
The city issued a total of 205 tickets and towed 23 vehicles on Friday and Saturday night.
Public Works director Tim O’Reilly said ticketing drivers and towing vehicles is the last resort.
“Our whole goal is to try and get the streets plowed for the moving public and the safety of the public,” said O’Reilly.
“In order for us to do that effectively, we have to have access to the full streets and cars have to be off the street.”
All 23 vehicles were towed during the south/central peninsula parking ban on Saturday night.
O’Reilly said no vehicles were towed Friday night in the north, east and west areas of the city.
“A lot of our towing resources were towing cars that were stuck, not necessarily cars that needed to be towed because of our parking ban,” he said.
During on-street parking bans in the south/central peninsula, the city opens up five lots for residents to park their vehicles.
But residents in the north, east and west areas of the city are on their own when bans are declared in those areas.
You can find more details about parking bans on the city’s website.
