Common Council recently adopted a policy for the Saint John Police Force (SJPF) to promote transparency and build more communication between police and the city.
The Agencies, Boards, and Commissions (ABC) reporting policy was also put in place to standardize reporting templates and guidelines that the City of Saint John requires.
“It was a policy put in place to standardize our reporting templates and guidelines to the city, and so as a commission that falls under ABC reporting we would report through the commission to council,” said Deputy Police Chief Tony Hayes.
Hayes also outlined the policy uses growth, finance, and operations as performance indicators (KPIs) to measure effectiveness and citizen satisfaction.
“So, growth was looking at, if you look at the police service, how can we help the city grow? Then we identify KPI’s and look at community satisfaction, community safety, and decrease of collisions, which is related to traffic calming and safety.”
Items measured under finance will include minimum staffing numbers per platoon, and how effective the budget is being managed.
Under operation, changes have been made to SJPF’s “no call is too small” model with some calls getting directed to the Alternative Response Unit (ARU).
As well, the force is moving forward with its online reporting platform.
Hayes added the ABC reporting policy will send two reports a year to the Public Safety Committee and present an annual report to the committee within 160 days of December 31 of each year.
