An interesting first in the medical field for 2022.
Doctors at a hospital in Maryland did the first heart transplant from a pig to a human.
The patient, a 57 year old man, needed the transplant or he would be facing certain death.
The surgery took three days and is considered highly experimental. The University of Maryland showed that the transplant didn’t immediately reject the genetically modified heart.
The surgeons in this case performed gene-editing in the pig heart to remove the sugar in it’s cells, which is responsible for rapid organ rejection.
