Maritimers want the fishing industry involved in any discussion on rule changes, according to a survey released by Narrative Research conducted on behalf of the Unified Fisheries Conservation Alliance.
A total of 1,100 residents of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island were surveyed for Narrative Research’s Atlantic Quarterly.
The survey found 80% of Maritimers agreed representatives for non-Indigenous fishers should be included in any consultations between them and government about the rules. 73% agreed established commercial fishing seasons and regulations should be enforced for everyone. And 69% agreed there should be one set of integrated rules for all, established by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
In a release, UFCA President Colin Sproul commented on the results, saying it’s important for the industry to have a voice in any discussion on rule changes.
He added their goal is to work with government and indigenous fishers to ensure the conservation and sustainability of the fishery for generations to come.
