There is a new service to report non-urgent crimes if you live in an area of RCMP jurisdiction.
The Online Crime Reporting website allows people to report crimes to the RCMP without having to call the police or visit a detachment.
It should only take about 15 minutes as the website guides you through a series of questions about the incident.
“When you enter your information, you will receive an email confirmation with an incident number and a report, which can be used for insurance purposes,” says Cpl. Hans Ouellette of the New Brunswick RCMP.
“By reporting your incident through OCR, you are also helping police gather more accurate data about crimes that are taking place, allowing us to better serve our communities.”
People can submit reports for crimes such as mischief or damage to property under $5,000, along with theft under $5,000 including bicycle thefts and lost property.
The service is not recommended when there are witnesses or video evidence of the crime, if the value exceeds $5,000, or if it involves stolen firearms or personal identification like a passport or driver’s license.
It’s also not meant to replace other forms of reporting especially if a crime is still in progress. In that case, you should still call 911.
