The president of the New Brunswick Nurses Union says she is “always worried” about the state of provincial healthcare.
Paula Doucet said exhausted nurses were in the trenches long before the pandemic began in 2020 when the province was already dealing with a severe nursing shortage.
Doucet said they started to see a light at the end of the tunnel when the Omicron variant began to take hold.
She said nurses were already struggling and tired when the pandemic began.
“They’ve been [working] at a pace that is probably not sustainable for any human right now. They all need a break. Everybody deserves that break. They need to recharge, they need to go home stress-free and right now that has not happened for more than 22 months,” said Doucet.
Doucet said she worries about the physical and mental toll COVID-19 has taken on frontline staff and wonders what the healthcare system will look like in the future.
