Today is the fourth anniversary of the passing of a Riverview teen who encouraged people around the world to help one another.
Her mom Anne Schofield says it is also Random Act of Kindness day, which is what her daughter Becca inspired others to do, “She would say an act of kindness doesn’t have to cost anything. It can just be a smile, it can be giving of your time, being considerate, holding a door. She would say an act of kindness benefited three people. It would benefit the recipient. It would benefit the giver, because it feels great to do something nice for someone and put a smile on somebody’s face. And it would benefit her because she got to read about it. It grew beyond anything that we could imagine. It did bring her a lot of joy.”
Her social media #BeccaToldMeTo was shared in 94 countries.
“Fun fact. She was born on September 1st, which is Random Act of Kindness day in New Zealand. She passed away on Random Act of Kindness day in North America. New Zealand is a country she always wanted to visit,” Anne says.
Rebecca was diagnosed with a brain tumour when she was 15 years old. It was successfully removed, but when she was 17, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer after two more tumours developed, and they were inoperable.
“To me, she has left us with such a gift. Everyday we are reminded of people she has inspired. When you lose someone, you may not bring them up, because they think it will make you sad. With us, when people find out we are Becca’s parents, a smile comes to their face, because they have a story to tell. The legacy she left, she will never be forgotten,” Anne says.
