A crane operator escaped injury after their machine fell into the Canaan River in Coles Island, between Fredericton and Moncton.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure said the incident happened at a construction site on Tuesday afternoon.
Spokesperson Mark Taylor said the 130-tonne crane was working as part of the Coles Island Bridges replacement project.
“What happened is a crane, unfortunately, fell into the river at the site and is tangled in some power lines,” Taylor said in an interview Tuesday evening.
NB Power reported nearly 250 homes and businesses in the Coles Island area without power. They remain without electricity as of Wednesday morning with no estimated restoration time.
Taylor said no damage was done to either of the two detour bridges which are currently in place.
“The appropriate investigation will be undertaken before the work on the project continues,” he said.
