Canada is taking more action against Russia in response to its ongoing attack on Ukraine.
Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says Canada will ban crude oil imports from Russia.
“President Putin’s actions blatantly violate international law and threaten international peace and security. In response, we intend to ban crude oil imports from Russia,” Wilkinson said in a statement late Monday.
“We continue to do everything we can to support Ukraine and are united with allies in holding Russia to account for its unprovoked and unjustified invasion.”
According to the Canada Energy Regulator, our country has not imported any crude oil from Russia since 2019.
Federal officials said the proposed ban, which would be effective until further notice, would ensure this remains the case going forward.
Ottawa said it is also taking steps to identify more petroleum products that might be included in the ban.
