Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants the process for Ukraine membership into the European Union (EU) to be fast-tracked.
He made the plea Tuesday as the conflict with Russia is into day five.
Former President Petro Poroshenko signed an association agreement with the EU in 2017, which requires both parties to co-operate and converge on economic policy, legislation and regulation.
“A broad range of issues (are covered) including things like workers rights, human rights, VISA free movement between Ukraine and the 28 member states of the European Union,” explained Dr. Stephen Jobbitt, Associate Professor in History with Lakehead University. “There’s also a commitment to exchange information and staff with respect to justice issues. There’s also talk of modernizing the energy infrastructure of Ukraine.”
Jobbitt noted that the economic part of the agreement was certified in 2014 following the overthrowing of former President Viktor Yanukovych, which contributed to growing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, and Russia and the West.
Jobbitt added it is unlikely that the EU will fast track membership for Ukraine, largely because Putin will consider it a further act of aggression by the West.
If finalized, Ukraine would gain more direct access to the European Investment Bank (EIB).
Countries that want to join the EU have to make a commitment to economical, judicial and financial reforms that meet European standards.
Officials made no commitment to expedite the process of membership.
