The MP for Saint John-Rothesay says he supports the decision to lift the remaining COVID-19 measures in New Brunswick.
Monday ushered in a return to what things looked like pre-pandemic as the remaining measures were removed.
Wayne Long told our newsroom that he has put his trust behind public health officials since the pandemic began.
“When [chief medical health officer Dr.] Jennifer Russell recommended that we clamp down and lockdown, I supported that. Now she’s recommending that we open up and certainly I support her and that decision too,” Long said after an event in Grand Bay-Westfield on Monday morning.
While masks are no longer required in indoor public places, they were still a common sight throughout the day Monday.
Depending on where you were, it was easier to find people still wearing a mask than not wearing one.
Long said despite trusting public health officials, he is among those feeling some apprehension as we do away with measures we have been so used to taking over the past two years.
“I have my mask, I wear my mask when and where I want to. I encourage everybody to do the same. If you’re not comfortable, put your mask on,” he said. “But that being said, it is time for us to move to a more open phase.”
The Liberal MP credited New Brunswickers for stepping up over the past two years to get us to this point in the pandemic.
“Certainly, I’m not saying that there’s not going to be some road bumps and challenges ahead, but it is time for us to move forward as a community and I’m also hoping that we can start to heal as a community, too.”
