Saint John police say a 22-year-old man has been arrested after an hours-long standoff in the south end.
Police said they were trying to arrest the man as part of an ongoing investigation that began two weeks ago.
During the early morning hours of March 4, police said officers were called to a Britain Street apartment building for a report of a suspicious person.
“During their investigation, they were confronted by a suspect who pointed an imitation firearm at the officers. The suspect was not apprehended at that time,” police said in a news release.
The man was finally located at his apartment around 3 p.m. Thursday, but police said he barricaded himself inside with weapons.
Officers evacuated part of the apartment building, located at the corner of Britain and Carmarthen streets, and told other residents living nearby to shelter in place.
They also contained the apartment in question until the Emergency Tactical Services and negotiators arrived at the scene.
“At approximately 8:10 p.m., following on-going negotiations, the suspect safely surrendered to police and remains in custody,” said the release.
No injuries were reported, and the accused is scheduled to appear in court on Friday to face multiple charges.
With files from Brad Perry and Tamara Steele.
Following negotiations, a 22-year-old man has surrendered to police and is now in custody. Residents on Britain Street are no longer required to shelter in place. The Saint John Police thanks the public for their patience and cooperation. Further information to follow.
