The Anglophone South School District Education Council (DEC) has added a First Nations representative.
Teresa Sewell has ties to the Rexton and Richibucto area, grew up in Fredericton, and now lives in Charlotte County.
While her area doesn’t have a recognized First Nation, she stays connected to the community through the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council.
“I can now take it to my own district which is therefore lacking so I’m kind of excited in that way,” Sewell said.
Sewell was asked what she hopes to bring to the role.
“I hope a lot. I’m really excited to kind of experience what it’s like and what other people contribute so it gives me can some ideas and sparks interest in what I can contribute so I can be better prepared for the next meeting,” Sewell said.
Sewell also brings the parent perspective to her role with a daughter in Grade 4.
Superintendent Zoë Watson said they are thrilled to have Sewell join the DEC.
Sewell will be connected to Laura Taylor, a subject coordinator who does a lot of work bringing First Nations initiatives into their schools.
