Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says 17 inmates at Atlantic Institution have tested positive for COVID-19.
The maximum-security facility, located in Renous, N.B., has a rated capacity of 331 inmates.
Prison officials say the number of active cases is based on either rapid or PCR tests.
“The health and safety of our employees, inmates and the public continue to be our top priority,” said Correctional Service of Canada in a statement.
“We are closely monitoring the situation, and measures are in place to minimize spread of the virus within the institution.”
Staff say COVID-19 testing is being offered to inmates, and they continue to reinforce infection prevention and control measures to prevent and contain the spread of COVID-19.
Inmates have also been provided with medical masks and are encouraged to wear them when not in their cells, and enhanced cleaning and disinfecting throughout the site continues.
As a result of the outbreak, regularly scheduled visits may be affected.
CSC has been vaccinating inmates since January 2021.
