The Prime Minister is speaking out against verbal harassment against women in politics.
Many were outraged by a video on social media, a man could be seen yelling and swearing at Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland during a stop in Alberta.
Justin Trudeau says it was not an isolated incident.
“We are seeing increasingly people in public life, people in positions of responsibility particularly, women being targeted almost because of the strength of your voices, of your positions, of the impact you are having around the world,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau said leaders need to take a stance against this behavior.
“No matter who you are, who you love, the colour of your skin, how you pray, where you are from, your gender. you deserve respect and you deserve to live in peace without fear of threats and violence,” Trudeau said.
The video has been widely condemned by politicians of all stripes.
Former cabinet ministers, Lisa Raitt and Catherine McKenna, said it made them feel sick.
I'm speaking up now because I'm out & it's bonkers. Women in politics but of course everyone need to both feel & be safe. And you shouldn't need to tough it out or beg for that to happen. Of course it's about the individual and family's safety. But it's also about democracy.
