Twenty-four years ago Swissair Flight 111 went down off the coast of Nova Scotia.
About one hour out of New York en route to Geneva the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit and tried to get to the Halifax airport for an emergency landing.
The plane carrying 229 people crashed into the Atlantic Ocean at 10:31 p.m. near Peggy’s Cove on September 2nd, 1998.
Hundreds of rescue workers immediately descended on the region to search the dark and choppy seas.
There were no survivors.
It took experts nearly five years to figure out what happened.
The investigation determined faulty electrical wiring was the culprit behind the fire.
