A bit of good news for air travellers this fall with additional flights added by Air Canada at the Saint John Airport.
One new flight each will be added for Toronto and Montreal beginning in late October for a total of four flghts a week.
Sandy Ross, president and CEO of the Saint John Airport, said Air Canada cancelled nearly 10,000 flights in July and August as they struggled to get services in Toronto and Montreal sorted out.
“For us it meant a pretty severe interruption to service. It represented about 50 per cent of the traffic we would normally have with Air Canada,” Ross said.
Ross said that situation seems to have righted itself adding it helped to have Flair and Swoop pick up some of the capacity.
As for other carriers, Ross said Flair Airlines will likely wrap up their operations at the end of October.
“With PAL and with Porter [Airlines], we’re in continuing discussion to see what opporotunities there are for 2023. We’re very hopeful those will bear fruit before the year is out. We’ll have some announcements,” Ross said.
Ross said the relationship between local staff and the flying public has been “terrific”.
He thinks everyone flying Air Canada knew the local staff were not at fault for the many cancelled flights this summer.
