Irving Oil will give $2 million over the next 10 years to help students starting undergraduate programs at the University of New Brunswick.
The money will come in the form of more than 30 scholarships, valued at $40,000 each, 100 bursaries worth $1,000 each, and contributions to research opportunities and ongoing programming at UNB.
Irving’s Good Energy Scholarships will be given to New Brunswick residents starting an undergrad degree at UNB in Fredericton or Saint John.
The scholarships will focus on supporting students from under-represented groups, with selections made based on academic achievement and community involvement.
This year, Irving gave Good Energy Scholarships to Estella Calderon of Richibucto, Veronica Garcia of Florenceville-Bristol, Kaley Paul of Fredericton, and Chani Salomon of Riverview.
Meanwhile, Irving’s bursaries will be given to UNB undergrads based on financial need. One hundred will be given out over the next four years.
Part of Irving’s $2-million pledge includes support for ongoing programming, “including annual events for award recipients. Research opportunities will also be developed, aimed at advancing a more sustainable energy future in our region.”
