With soaring gas prices and the increasing cost of groceries, finding enough food is a growing need for communities all over Saint John including the north end.
The Crescent Valley Resource Centre has encouraged folks to register for Christmas assistance with the purchase of food and gifts during the Holiday season.
Executive Director Anne Driscoll said they are working with churches and other groups to get people signed up for the Christmas Exchange and the Empty Stocking Fund.
“October 31st was the first day that RiverCross Mission did their registrations. I heard through the grapevine it was very, very busy there. I know people are anxious to get registered,” Driscoll said.
Registration is now open for the programs which help families cope with the cost of gifts and food during the holidays.

Driscoll said the families who want to register will require specific identification signing up.
“Families need a medicare card or medicare number for every individual in the household. They need proof of residence as in their address,” Driscoll said.
Driscoll said they are seeing more and more people who require their assistance around food security.
“We provide a breakfast program twice a week and it’s been busy than ever,” Driscoll said.
She said they provide food packages when they can and other food assistance.
“We’re seeing people that just can’t afford the grocery store anymore,” Driscoll said.
