The governments of New Brunswick and Canada will soon each receive two separate letters from the city of Saint John.
On Tuesday, Saint John’s common council unanimously approved two letters to be sent to both governments inviting them to investigate both a living wage and options for a food recovery program within the city.
The hope is that evidence-based solutions will be brought forward that will improve income and food security, especially for low-income and vulnerable populations.
“We know people that are under 40 account for a lot less of the overall wealth in our nation than people of the last generation did at that age, and it’s not getting better any time sooner,” mentioned Councillor Brent Harris.
“There does need to be a reform of a major scale on incomes and for the working class and this is an opportunity for us to get the provincial and federal governments to work on it and to look at it seriously,” added Harris.
The letters were discussed previously at the last common council meeting after Councillor Barry Ogden brought forward the initial motion.
