New figures from Statistics Canada show travel into our country continues to rebound.
Residents from the United States took nearly 1.6 million trips to Canada in September.
That was three times higher than a year earlier and represented over two-thirds of the trips taken in September 2019, before the pandemic.
More than 908,000 of those trips were by automobile, with 40 per cent being same-day returns. This time last year, there were fewer than 400,000 arrivals by automobile.
Residents of overseas countries also made over three times more trips to Canada in September, with 468,000 residents arriving here during that time.
There were 270,000 arrivals from Europe, which remained the largest segment of overseas visitors. Recovery of the Asian market, however, continued to lag, with 89,000 visitors.
Meanwhile, the figures from StatCan show Canadians are also travelling more out of the country.
Canadians returned from nearly three million trips abroad in September, almost four times higher than last year and reaching almost two-thirds of pre-pandemic levels.
That includes nearly 2.5 million trips to the United States, more than five times the number recorded the year earlier. Of those, 1.7 million trips were by automobile, with over half being same-day trips.
The number of Canadian residents returning by air from the U.S. was 720,000, up sharply from 175,000 a year earlier and rising above pre-pandemic levels for the first time.
More than 538,000 Canadians returned from visiting overseas, more than one-and-a-half times the number that returned during the same month in 2021.
