A Saint John Sea Dogs forward has been suspended for violating the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s anti-discrimination policy.
Brady Burns was handed a five-game suspension, the league announced in a statement on Saturday.
“The suspension was handed out following inappropriate language that was used on December 16 against the Cape Breton Eagles,” said the league’s statement.
According to the game report, Burns received a game misconduct for “discriminatory taunts, gestures and slurs.”
No other details about what led to the game misconduct and suspension were released by the team or the league.
Trevor Georgie, president and general manager of the Sea Dogs, released a statement on Saturday regarding the suspension of Burns.
“There are no excuses for discriminatory language and we support their decision. The team will help the player learn and grow from this,” said Georgie.
“The Saint John Sea Dogs pride ourselves on being a progressive organization and are committed to building a culture that is inclusive, safe, and free from discriminatory language.”
Georgie went on to say that it is important for the league to have policies in place which prevent discrimination.
