A 27-year-old fisher lost at sea over the holidays was the victim of a freak accident.
In a post from the Atlantic Canada Fishermen’s Association, it states Christian Atwood got tangled on a line and pulled under while setting a lobster trawl (multiple set of traps attached in series by a single line).
He was wearing a life jacket (or PFD) when it happened on Boxing Day in waters off Cape Sable Island, N.S.
The post goes on to explain, Captain Joe Townsend of the Little Weasel II, took a heart attack and has recently been transferred to Halifax.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Christian’s family, friends and crew of the MV Little Weasel II at this difficult time.” said Nova Scotia Fisheries Minister Steve Craig.
Atwood was living in Shelburne County and leaves behind his girlfriend Kristen and 14 month old son Colson. He was also step father to his girlfriends two children.
“Christians family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers at this time and ask for continued prayer to bring him home.” – Atlantic Canada Fishermen’s Association
A mayday call came in early Monday morning. It launched a large scale search on the water and in the air. However, the search was unsuccessful and resources were scaled back at noon on Tuesday.
The association is setting up a trust account for Colson Atwood and family. Donations can be made to the following email:
