A New Brunswick-based first aid training firm has begun its Maritime expansion.
Life Start Training announced Wednesday that its first franchise will be located in Halifax.
It marks the first step toward what the company hopes will be more locations around the Maritimes — and across the country.
“When we launched Life Start seven years ago, my vision was to change some of the feelings people have about taking first aid, through awareness, classroom engagement, and top-notch training and equipment. That approach hasn’t changed,” CEO Khryspn Jensen said in a news release.
“With the exciting launch of our own approved programs, we will be able to pursue innovation and pivot our training methods to better serve communities as we all navigate a post-pandemic world.”
In October, Life Start announced it was looking to set up locations in Fredericton, Halifax, Dartmouth, Truro, Cape Breton, and Prince Edward Island.
Jensen said she originally thought about working with independent training centres and allowing them to offer Life Start programs, which include certified virtual, hybrid and in-person courses.
But she wanted to have more control over the content and delivery of training, which she said is critical to improving survival rates.
Jensen said franchisees will get all of the tools needed to succeed much quicker than it typically takes in this industry.
The new Halifax location, located on Chain Lake Drive in Bayer’s Lake, will be operated by Colin and Joanne MacDougall.
“A number of months ago, our youngest daughter found herself in need of basic first aid training after she had been hired to work part-time at a daycare,” the couple said in the news release.
“She searched online to find somewhere offering the training she needed, but ended up having to travel all the way to Dartmouth to access a program and couldn’t access a class as quickly as she wanted.”
The MacDougalls, who have experience in the business sector as the owners of a small restaurant in the area, said they are looking forward to furthering their commitment to the local community.
According to Life Start, the Halifax location is set to open on Feb. 27.
