Prepare to dial a few extra digits when making local phone calls.
Ten-digit dialing rolls out across New Brunswick on Friday, Jan. 20.
It means you now need to start adding the area code to any local calls you make.
Local calls dialed with only seven digits may be intercepted by a reminder message before being connected.
Officials say the recorded announcement may disrupt data transmission on equipment such as auto dialers, alarm systems and lifeline equipment.
Calls will continue to go through untilĀ April 15, after which time seven-digit local calls will not be completed.
The change to 10-digit dialing paves the way for the addition of the new 428 area code starting in late April.
It is needed as the existing 506 area code is soon expected to reach capacity, officials say.
Residents with the 506 area code will keep their numbers, and numbers with the new 428 area code will only be assigned when the existing inventory is used up.
