NB Power is exploring a possible partnership with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) on Point Lepreau.
Spokesperson Dominique Couture confirmed Wednesday that discussions are currently underway.
“The status quo is not an option for NB Power,” Couture said in an emailed statement, adding that “all possible options are being considered.”
Talks around the nuclear generating station come as the utility looks at ways to improve its financial health.
Couture said the utility has used partnership models in the past “to help resolve long-standing issues and improve performance.”
“While this partnership is still at the exploration stage, we have a long-standing relationship with OPG, and we know them to be good partners, allies and colleagues,” said Couture.
“Any partnership would be a win-win relationship, established in the best interests of both Ontario and New Brunswick.”
Ontario Power Generation has plenty of experience in dealing with nuclear power. The utility operates 10 reactors at two generating stations in Ontario.
Officials from the two electric utilities are expected to meet in the coming weeks.
