Are you and your family prepared in the event of an emergency?
Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada runs from May 7 to 14. This year, the theme is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.
You are encouraged to understand the risks in your area and learn what actions you can take to protect your family.
In addition, you should also be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
Your emergency kit should include water — about four litres per person per day — along with food for your family and pets, a flashlight, radio, batteries, and chargers for your mobile devices.
You should also have a first aid kit consisting of bandages, antiseptic wipes, protective gloves, pain relievers, and face masks.
There are also some less obvious items to include, like prescription medications, cash, copies of important documents such as birth certificates, wills, passports and insurance policies, as well as contact info for friends and family who may be able to help.
You should make sure to replace any items that might expire at least once a year, such as food, water, batteries and medications.
