The provincial government has introduced changes to the Residential Tenancies Act in the legislature designed to close renting loopholes.
“Through our ongoing evaluation of the rental market and the effectiveness of our current regulations, we have identified necessary amendments to streamline and strengthen regulations,” said Jill Green, the minister responsible for housing.
“We will continue to monitor the effectiveness of our measures and introduce more if required.”
Landlords would be required to give tenants at least three months notice before a change in the use of any unit is made.
Landlords would also have to make an application to the tribunal to end a tenancy for renovations and demonstrate renos can only be done if the unit is vacant for a prolonged period.
Other changes include strengthening rules for fixed-term leases and improving the process for disposing abandoned belongings.
Various offences are also proposed to ensure compliance with the act.
