A fixture along Saint John’s waterfront is heading to a new home in Grand Manan over the coming days.
The lighthouse replica near the Saint John Trade & Convention Centre is being moved to accommodate the construction and redevelopment of the waterfront.
Built near the boardwalk several years ago, the lighthouse has most recently been used as a uniquely disguised storage area.
“We knew the waterfront development would, at some point, lead us to eventually relocate the lighthouse, or risk demolishing it altogether,< Gerald Mattsson, municipal engineer for the city, said in a news release.
“Finding a new location was the priority and we are so pleased to see it go to our friends at the Village of Grand Manan.”
Mattsson said they have been working with the village on a plan to ensure the safe transportation of the lighthouse from Saint John to the new location.
While the structure has never operated as a functioning lighthouse, the city said it has been recognized by residents and visitors as a fixture within the harbour.
