Premiers in Atlantic Canada are calling on Ottawa to delay the implementation of new clean fuel regulations.
In a joint news release Thursday, the premiers said they want to see a plan to “address the disproportionate impact of the regulations on Atlantic Canadians.”
The Council of Atlantic Premiers met virtually Wednesday with federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault to discuss these issues.
The new regulations are set to take effect on July 1, which is the same day as a carbon tax increase. It means you will be paying even more for gas and diesel, though the exact amount is unknown.
“These increases will further add to inflationary pressures that will increase the costs of other goods imported to the region,” the council said in the news release.
In addition, the premiers said they are concerned by the uncertainty the new regulations may create and were disappointed there is no clarity surrounding the impact on fuel prices and supplies.
“Atlantic premiers are encouraged by the minister’s commitment to work with them to address concerns expressed by producers and consumers in the region,” said the release.
