Nova Scotia’s Premier Tim Houston says it’s up to Ottawa to foot the bill to maintain the stretch between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
The Chignecto Isthmus is at risk for flooding due to climate change and the federal government is urging both provinces to apply to the federal disaster mitigation fund by July 19 in order to pay for half of the roughly $300 million maintenance required for the link.
Premier Houston says no.
“We’re not going to help them get away from their responsibility…they should pay to maintain that trade corridor and that’s what we see,” Houston said.
Houston compares the obligation to that of the confederation bridge, the span that connects New Brunswick to P.E.I.
