The new minister responsible for seniors in New Brunswick says she is excited to get to work.
Saint Croix MLA Kathy Bockus was named to the new portfolio in Tuesday’s cabinet shuffle.
Speaking to reporters after the shuffle, Bockus said she believes she has the experience.
“I certainly dealt with a lot of seniors issues when we were having our accessibility committee meetings, I chaired that committee, so I’m looking forward to this,” said Bockus.
Bockus, who is a former journalist, said she has no issue joining cabinet, despite the recent turmoil.
Two ministers stepped down earlier in June, citing concerns with the leadership of Premier Blaine Higgs.
In addition, two other ministers were booted out of cabinet on Tuesday for previously supporting an opposition Liberal motion calling for more consultation on Policy 713, the province’s LGBTQ+ policy in schools.
Bockus said she believes in the premier and wants to see the province move forward.
“I want to go forward positively,” she said. “When I was a reporter, I always tried to present things in a positive way and that’s how I want to continue in this portfolio.”
The minister said she expects to work closely with her cabinet colleagues, particularly those overseeing the Department of Social Development and the new minister responsible for addictions and mental health services.
“Let’s face it, we’ve all got to work together for the seniors in our province, plain and simple,” said Bockus.
