With extreme heat in the forecast, it’s recommended you leave your pets at home, even if Fido really enjoys a car ride.
The temperature can be deadly if they’re left alone inside a vehicle.
NB SPCA Chief Animal Protection Officer Tony Porter says, “Sit in the driveway, turn on your air conditioner and let it run for a while and then cool down. Then shut the car off, and even leave your windows down a little bit. Sit in that car and tell me how long you can sit before you have to get out. It’s twice as bad for a dog because they don’t sweat the same way we do.”
He recommends getting help if you do see an animal in distress in a car, “The best thing to do is just call the local law enforcement and have them get there as quick as they can.”
He doesn’t recommend smashing the window or taking things into your own hands to get the animal out.
